I'm Auke, a software engineer in Utrecht. I like quality flat whites and building systems that can take whatever the internet throws at them without paging anyone at 3am. I work at bol, the largest e-commerce platform in the Netherlands and Belgium. Most of my work is in Go and GCP, but I've never been great at staying in one lane.
I gravitate towards the broad, messy problems. The ones that cross team boundaries and don't have obvious owners. The bot mitigation project at bol cut across most of the organisation. When a major cloud outage hit, I coordinated incident response across the platform because I tend to know how systems connect, even the ones I'm not directly involved with. I tend to think in systems. I want to understand how the pieces connect before I start changing them. I like small teams, hard problems, and environments where I can own things end to end. I'm at my best when I can go deep on a problem and ship it right.
Outside work, I'm a chronic tinkerer. My home office doubles as a small workshop, with a Bambu X1C, an oscilloscope, and more half-finished projects than I'd like to admit. I build side projects whenever an idea won't leave me alone. When the weather's nice, I ride a Yamaha Tracer 700, make flat whites I'm probably too particular about, have a modest LP collection, and love music with a funky bassline. I shoot on a Sony A7 III, mostly landscapes and travel. Some of my favorite memories are below.
I care about doing things right. Not perfectly, but right. I'd rather understand a system deeply than ship something fast that won't hold up when nobody's watching.
